If business leaders thought we could take a break from ballot measures after the busy November 2016 ballot, it’s time to think again. In Los Angeles County, we are facing a steady and relentless increase in the number of our neighbors who find themselves without a home. This is a human crisis, and as leaders of our community, business owners must help lead the fight against homelessness. It also reflects an economic problem, as rising housing costs push our employees further away from their workplaces. Read more

Across the country, many people are back in the office after ringing in the New Year, with their New Year’s resolutions made and with hopes for what 2017 may hold. For businesses of all sizes, a new year means an update to the employee handbook, and this year’s updates are especially important. In 2016, California passed numerous labor and employment laws affecting businesses across the state. Employers should review their current policies and practices to ensure compliance with all of the new laws for 2017. Read more

California businesses sell their products, services and ideas all over the world. In Los Angeles, our economy depends on exporting goods and services. We host two of the largest ports in the world, and one of the largest airports. We have movie studios, technology companies, and manufacturers whose groundbreaking products have helped us explore space. We have so much to offer the world, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership will help us export our goods and services to key markets outside of the United States. Read more

In the 7 years running our marketing firm, the biggest surprise for my colleagues is when they find out the number of industrial and manufacturing clients Infinite has for Search Engine Optimization and Internet marketing services. I’m often asked… “Wait, you mean companies search online to purchase $20,000 parts?” or even “That Fortune 500 Company looked online to buy those shipping products?” The answer is Yes! Read more

Trash too often seems to be an afterthought. Yes, the trash room was built and the chute installed or a corner of the garage marked off for the containers. But that’s usually it. Most trash discussions usually take place because of a problem, an injury that has occurred, a rodent infestation or the cost has gotten to the point that people are asking questions. Trash-handling and the implementation of a solid waste management program, along with good in-house procedures, can keep costs in check and greatly reduce expenses. The key is to get involved early and include housekeeping and / or the facility manager, as well as outside advice. Identify areas of concern and begin working with a qualified waste services consultant / equipment supplier to establish an understanding in order to develop an unbiased plan. Read more

Thousands of businesses throughout Los Angeles rely on signage to support their livelihood. And as many VICA members already know, the city is long overdue in its need for sensible billboard legislation. It's been decades since the city began its process to regulate digital billboards and other signs, which is why VICA recently attended the City Planning Commission’s hearing to discuss the billboard ordinance and sign districts being proposed. We're eagerly awaiting an even-handed solution from City Council, but are concerned on behalf of the business community regarding the restrictive approach the city discussed. Read more

While many people prepare to celebrate the Labor Day holiday, some Californian health care workers are already hard at work. A laboratory technician has arrived early to analyze samples and post results to enable timely diagnoses for anxious patients. A janitor has carefully wiped door handles and counters at a hospital to help prevent the spread of infection. The role doctors play in saving lives is well known, but there are thousands more unsung heroes in our hospitals. Together, they keep us well. And if we listen to their ideas, they can also help heal the nation’s health care system. Read more

An attorney experienced in employment law gave a talk Wednesday at the VICA office on new rules taking effect next week for any Californian with one or more employees in their business. Sue Bendavid of Lewitt Hackman, who specializes in employment litigation and counseling, primarily for employers, called the new rules a “game-changer,” at the talk, which was part of VICA U -- a series of educational seminars by members and affiliated organizations for the benefit of VICA members.
