For those who are parents, we have needed to transition into teachers and tutors while continuing to meet the obligations of our jobs. For those who have fallen ill or have a family member who has fallen ill, you may have needed to take time from work to care for them. And for those whose workplaces have taken a huge financial hit due to COVID, you may have been laid off due to financial shortfalls. Read more

    About a month ago, there was a glimmer of hope that things were getting better. The number of COVID-19 cases were beginning to drop, and more tests were becoming available. Non-essential businesses were also allowed to reopen. If they complied with state and local health orders and public health requirements, businesses could resume operations and begin to bring their employees back to work. This was great. Reopening meant a road to economic recovery. It all seemed promising. Read more

    Van Nuys, Calif. – Today, the Los Angeles City Council voted to delay placing a proposed tax on vacant properties and parcels on the ballot until the 2022 election. The decision comes after the City released reports two weeks ago on the feasibility of taxing vacant properties. Read more

    Van Nuys, Calif. – Today, The Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) launched their COVID-19 Resources and Information page on their website to supply their members and the community with updated and pertinent details regarding business regulations, resources available, news, health updates as well as positive impacts being made within the community during and following the COVID-19 pandemic.     Van Nuys, Calif. – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order regarding workers’ compensation for employees impacted by COVID-19. The order includes a provision for a rebuttable presumption that any employee who has contracted COVID-19, contracted it during the course of employment. Read more

    Today, the Los Angeles City Council approved a Right of Recall Ordinance and Worker Retention Ordinance – two polices that will impede the ability for businesses to recover from the COVID-19 public health and economic crisis. Despite VICA’s calls to the City Council urging important changes to the Ordinances to remove provisions on rebuttable presumptions and punitive damages - the City Council chose to make surviving the economic crisis impossible for businesses.     Van Nuys, Calif. – Today, the Metro Executive Management Committee considered a request by the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (COG) for an additional $2.5 million in Measure M funding for the South Bay Fiberoptic Network Project. Read more

    On March 27, the Los Angeles City Council approved a Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Ordinance, which would have applied to businesses with have 500 employees or more nationwide. While this was good for small businesses, there were still provisions in the Ordinance that were concerning for the business community. Thanks to VICA's efforts and the efforts of the Los Angeles business coalition group, the Mayor has decided not to sign the Ordinance approved by the City Council. Read more

    On March 27, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a $2 trillion economic relief bill, passed both houses of Congress and was signed by President Trump. The package includes provisions designed to provide aid to businesses who are struggling due to the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19. Read more
