    This morning, Senator Scott Wiener re-introduced Senate Bill 50, reaffirming his relentless commitment to address California’s housing crisis. SB 50, or the More H.O.M.E.S. Act, failed to make it out of the Senate Appropriations Committee in 2019, turning it into a two-year bill. The Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA) is proud to continue our support for SB 50 and we applaud the tireless efforts by Senator Wiener to create a standard for how and where housing should be constructed.     As a constituent and as a friend, I extend my warmest congratulations to Councilwoman Martinez. I’ve known Nury for 25 years since our undergraduate days at CSUN, and as Council President, I know that she will be a dynamic leader who will continue her fierce advocacy for her constituents, for Los Angeles, and for the San Fernando Valley.     The Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) is proud Governor Gavin Newsom has signed VICA-sponsored bill AB 1560, authored by Assemblymember Laura Friedman, into law. This bill would allow more housing to be built in the San Fernando Valley along high-quality transit corridors. Read more

    Van Nuys, Calif. – The Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) is extremely pleased with Governor Newsom signing Assembly Bill 1197 (Santiago) into law. This legislation would exempt supportive housing projects funded by Measure HHH or emergency shelter projects funded by the Homeless Emergency Aid Program (HEAP) from CEQA requirements. Read more

    Van Nuys, Calif. – As California legislators voted on hundreds of bills during the last week of the legislative session this year, the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) successfully advocated on a number of priority bills for the business community. VICA was pleased that 79.5 percent of the bills VICA advocated on in the Legislature were successful, including bills that VICA supported which were sent to the Governor and VICA-opposed bills which failed to pass out of the Legislature.     Van Nuys, Calif. – Despite the Valley Industry and Commerce Association’s (VICA) strong efforts to oppose Assembly Bill 857 (Chiu), the California Legislature approved this bill, which will allow municipalities to establish and operate risky and expensive publicly-owned banks. Read more

    Van Nuys, Calif. – As AB 5 (Gonzalez) makes its way out of the legislature, the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) continues to be concerned with the implications of the bill, which limits the definition of independent contractor by codifying the California Supreme Court Dynamex ruling.     Van Nuys, Calif. – The Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA) applauds the passage of SCA 1 (Allen / Wiener) on the California Senate floor, which would place a measure on the 2020 ballot to allow the state to authorize the construction of low-rent housing projects financed in whole or in part by the state without approval from local voters.
