  • VICA Responds to Homeless Count Results

Van Nuys, Calif. – In response to the results of the 2019 Homeless Count released today, VICA President Stuart Waldman and Chair Lisa Gritzner said:
“Like every Angeleno, I am horrified and saddened by the humanitarian crisis we’re facing in our community. Our local City and County elected officials have been working hard to help lift people out of homelessness with Measure H and HHH revenue, both initiatives supported by VICA. Without their leadership and vision, Los Angeles would be facing even more dispiriting results, as we’ve seen in neighboring counties. Over 21,000 individuals were successfully re-housed in 2018, and we must remember that those individuals’ lives were changed by these efforts. Giving up is simply not an option,” said Lisa Gritzner, Chair of the VICA Board of Directors.
"It is clear that the number one cause for people experiencing homelessness is the lack of housing in Los Angeles. We know that it is becoming even more expensive to construct housing units, and for most housing developers, constructing housing in affordable parts of Los Angeles simply no longer pencils out. VICA is committed to working with our local and state elected leaders to reduce barriers and costs to build more housing, so that housing of all types can be constructed in Los Angeles.  In addition, VICA, working with our non-profit members, continues to engage on many of the other contributors in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, including mental illness, lack of employment opportunities, job training and improving our education system in LA.  We didn’t get here overnight, and we won’t get out of this struggle without all of us working together to make a positive difference for our community,” added Stuart Waldman, VICA President.
