VICA Viewpoint: June 26, 2009 What business issues do you think federal lawmakers should consider while addressing healthcare reform?
Health care reform needs to address the true underlying costs driving health care: unhealthy behaviors and lifestyle choices. According to many experts, including the Centers for Disease Control, and the American Medical Association, over 50 percent of every health care dollar is spent on preventable illness. We need to turn our attention to promoting healthier lifestyles. Barbara Oberman-Lippe VICA Membership Committee member; Barbara C. Oberman Insurance Services, Inc.
I do not believe we can effectively reform healthcare without addressing tort reform at the same time. I am not for capping valid lawsuits. However, there should be some recourse against frivolous lawsuits that end up costing all of us. It’s really just downright cheating. Doctors and hospitals unfortunately have had to go into the business of self-protection which involves unnecessary tests, insurance and other high cost protective measures in order to help insulate themselves against frivolous lawsuits.
