About the San Fernando Valley
The 101 and 405 Interchange in the San Fernando Valley |
| According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the San Fernando Valley region would be the fifth largest city in America were it its own city. If the Valley, Glendale and Burbank were one city, the area’s total population, 1.74 million residents, would be behind only New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. The region formerly known as “America’s suburb” in the 1950s is now as economically vibrant and ethnically diverse as the heart of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s first-ever demographic snapshot of the San Fernando Valley. The Valley has evolved from a predominantly white bedroom community into its own metropolis, with top wage earners as well as poverty, long commutes and heavy immigration. The entertainment industry is the Valley’s top industry. Other top sectors include retail, healthcare, and manufacturing. The Valley’s Van Nuys Airport (VNY) is the world’s busiest general aviation airport. In total, there are 850,000 jobs in the San Fernando Valley. |
